The meaning of the paradigm according to the SAR is: theory whose central core is accepted without question and that provides the basis and model for solving problems and advancing knowledge.
According to this definition, the obesity paradigm is based on the theory that you get fat by eating more than what you spend (income is greater than expenses).
This approach was universally accepted until the results of the treatments proposed by this paradigm began to be published: eat less and / or spend more.
Unfortunately, the long-term results turned out to be desperately disappointing, since to date with these techniques the solution of the problem is achieved in less than 5% of cases.
The final result is so frustrating that the American Union decided to gather those few people who managed to lose more than 30 pounds and maintain that loss for more than 5 years. How many of the millions who put on weight loss achieved this precious goal? A little more than 3,000 people.
The first researchers blamed the obese for these disappointing results. However, the medical community finally had to accept that they were wrong in the traditional approach of less discharged income equals obesity.
It is currently known that obesity is much more complex than 2 – 2 = 0.
Other reasons to gain weight are recognized that they have nothing to do with eating more or less, or exercising more or less.
The first reason identified for more than 40 years is that eating a few times a day, even if they are ingesting less than what is spent, favors the accumulation of fat. This reason is completely out of the paradigm that you get fat by eating more than you spend.
The second reason identified took a little longer and has precisely to do with the reason opposite to the traditional approach that is fattened by overeating: the deficiencies generate with secondary reaction the accumulation of body fat. This phenomenon is known as “starvation mode” in English, and says precisely that if we eat LESS than we owe, the body accumulates fat as a defense mechanism.
The third reason identified is related to stress, both social and biological. In relation to social stress, it is fully demonstrated that tense work relationships favor the accumulation of body fat, even if you are not eating more or less than the body needs.
Even if social stress impacts our sleep cycle, this also favors that we accumulate body fat, even applying the best nutritional program.
Finally it has been reported that different biological processes of stress are associated with the appearance of obesity: respiratory tract infections, digestive tract infections, tonsil surgeries, c- sections, and other types of abdomen surgery.
